This and That:
Nice design, good build quality.
I can't tell whether it's made of plastic or coated metal.
Buttons feel a bit spongy.
Only accepts FAT32-formatted cards, which is a shame these days.
Rather poor screen without IPS but still okay in terms of contrast or readability.
Only 32 volume steps. The quietest setting is too loud for me personally when using sensitive in-ears. Volume can only be adjusted when the screen is on. This sucks especially as the MegaMin sometimes takes between one to three seconds to react.
Very basic user interface.
Folder browser works just like it should. No progress bar when scrolling through lists.
It seems like not all cover graphic formats and sizes are supported.
Player feels slow navigating through menus and lists (wtf? Even much cheaper players react quicker).
Battery life (tested w/ Superlux HD668B, WAV file, volume @ 16, occasional unlocking and navigating through menus) 12 hours.
Sound:
Unloaded Frequency Response:
Minimal but irrelevant (inaudible) sub-bass roll-off but otherwise just as flat as it should be.
Output Impedance (Ultimate Ears Triple.Fi 10 as Load):
The deviation doesn't look typical for the Triple.Fi 10. Based on how it looks, one can assume that the output impedance of the MegaMini isn't constant but increases towards the treble, as it is also the case for the Chord Electronics Mojo. Therefore one can assume that the MegaMini's output impedance is around 1 Ohm (or slightly higher than that) in the treble. That value is definitely still good.
Hiss Performance:
Using sensitive in-ears, the MegaMini's hiss performance is about average - neither really good nor really bad. It isn't as quiet as my FiiO X3 that's on the quieter side (but definitely not hiss-free), but it isn't as hissy as the HiFiMe 9018d either. Still some mild hiss audible with moderately sensitive BA in-ears such as my Triple.Fi 10.
Subjective Sound Impressions:
It doesn't show any sonic abnormalities.
Conclusion:
Even though it doesn't have any major flaws and looks nice, it appears quite outdated and slow (my considerably less expensive and older SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip as well as Clip + are much more responsive and quicker). In my opinion the price is just too high for the total package and especially that it's got only 32 volume steps is a big letdown.
